May 19, 2020

On March 13, 2020, each and every Catholic in the Archdiocese of Hartford was dispensed from the obligation of attending Sunday Mass by Archbishop Leonard P. Blair. With the cancellation of public Masses and liturgies announced on March 16 and currently in effect until further notice, this dispensation has remained in effect for all Sunday Masses since that time.

In addition, Archbishop Blair has now dispensed each and every Catholic in the Archdiocese of Hartford from the obligation to attend Mass on Thursday, May 21, 2020, for the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, regularly a holy day of obligation.

The Archdiocese of Hartford is currently working to prepare a set of guidelines for the resuming of public Masses and liturgies at churches within the archdiocese. Once this work has been concluded and a completed set of guidelines has been prepared, the archbishop will announce when and how the resuming of public Masses and liturgies can take place.

frtom051520For Father Thomas Hickey, the Tenth Anniversary of his Ordination To the Priesthood fell on Friday, May 15 of this year. In God’s Providence, however, Father Tom was called home to his beloved Savior on March 13.

Since we did not have the opportunity to celebrate this milestone with him in his presence, you are invited to join your fellow parishioners as together we pray the rosary in his memory and with gratitude for his priestly service. Praying the rosary was a favorite devotion for Father Tom.

Live Stream of the rosary will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday May 17. Mass of the Sixth Sunday of Easter will follow at 10:a.m.

Dear Parishioners of St Mary Magdalen Church

We will be opening St Mary Magdalen Church for Individual prayer on Sundays following the 10:00 Mass that is streamed on line.  You will be able to come and spend some time in prayer with our Lord in the Church from 11:15 -5:00 pm.  While the church is open it is very important that social distancing regulations are observed and I encourage the wearing of a mask if other people are in the church.  The church will be cleaned each week to assure safety of all parishioners.  You may also pick up our weekly bulletin and maybe pick one up for a neighbor who cannot make it to the church. This time is reserved for individual prayer only. I hope you will have a moment to stop in and spend some time with our Lord.

We are grateful that many parish families continued the Lenten tradition of CRS Rice Bowl this year. Participating families can mail their remittance directly to Catholic Relief Services. They can do this through phone, pay-on-line, or mail a check. Here’s the information on how to send the remittance directly to CRS.  Mail in your donation; Catholic Relief Services CRS Rice Bowl P.O. Box 17090 Baltimore, Maryland 21297-0303, or to give by phone: 1-877-435-7277.

On behalf of the Office for Catholic Social Justice Ministry of The Archdiocese of Hartford, we thank you for your participation. Your participation in CRS Rice Bowl comes at a critical time in our world. Because of the impact of COVID-19 more people will be at risk of hunger. Your Lenten sacrifice will make a difference in the lives of others.

Thank you! Lynn Campbell Office for Catholic Social Justice Ministry

A note to those who have scheduled Mass intentions during this period of restriction on public Masses:

Due to the restrictions on public Masses the Mass intentions currently scheduled for a particular Vigil or Sunday Mass will be combined into one Mass which is celebrated at 10:00a.m. and streamed online.  We will continue to combine the scheduled intentions while the restriction on public Masses is in place.  If you do not wish to combine your Mass intention at this Mass please contact our office (860-274-9273) and we will find an open date later in the year. Please note that we have weekend Mass intentions already scheduled several months in advance.

Cancellation of Public Masses Extended

In light of the continued assessment of the spread of the coronavirus within Connecticut and Governor Lamont’s Executive Order of April 10th mandating the cancellation of school classes and the extension of closures of non-essential businesses through May 20, 2020, the Archdiocese has deemed it necessary to update the cancellation of public Masses and liturgies that had previously been extended through April 30, 2020.

Given the constantly changing landscape, and the decisions of civil authorities in this regard, the cancellation of public Masses and liturgies in the Archdiocese of Hartford (the counties of Hartford, Litchfield, and New Haven) will remain in effect until further notice.

****With this said, The Sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion will be scheduled at a date to be announced when our suspension has be lifted.

During this time of social separation, we are making every effort to communicate the most current updates and we will continue to do so, we will use the parish website, the parish app. and the weekly bulletin to do so.

****Please download the Parish App this is the easiest way to get the most up to date information.

HOLY WEEK LITURGIES

In this time of great need, it is all the more important that we celebrate Holy Week and Easter creatively within the strict limitations of social separation. Holy Week and Easter will be celebrated in the church of St. Mary Magdalen by Father George Mukuka, Deacon Mike Malfitano, our cantor and organist within the parameters set by the Congregation of Divine Worship in Rome regarding these celebrations without a congregation. Live Stream, and Video recordings of these celebrations will be posted on our parish website and Facebook. You will be notified of these postings by our myParish App.

As, Live Stream and Video may be available to you another option  of watching the liturgies for Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday as they are broadcast or streamed from the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Hartford or from Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome as a way of being united with the larger Church wrought by the pandemic as we are. Then, watch the recorded celebrations on our parish website for a more local feel. Keep in mind the different time zones for anything live from Rome. Palm Sunday and Easter are scheduled for broadcast and streaming in the Archdiocese. Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigils are scheduled for streaming.
